Swami Vivekananda (1863–1902) was a towering figure in Indian history, a philosopher, monk, and social reformer who bridged the gap between the East and the West. He is best known for bringing Hindu philosophy to the global stage and for his tireless efforts to empower the youth of India.
All About Swami Vivekananda :-
Early Life and Education
Born on January 12, 1863, in Kolkata (then Calcutta) as Narendranath Datta, he came from an affluent and intellectual family.
- Father: Vishwanath Datta, an attorney with a rationalist outlook.
- Mother: Bhuvaneshwari Devi, a deeply religious woman who shaped his moral character.
Narendra was a precocious child, excelling in sports, music, and academics. While studying at Presidency College, he became fascinated by Western philosophy and logic. However, this intellectual journey led him to a period of spiritual crisis where he began to question the existence of God.
Meeting Sri Ramakrishna
The turning point in his life occurred in 1881 when he met the mystic Sri Ramakrishna Paramahansa. Narendra famously asked him, "Sir, have you seen God?" to which Ramakrishna replied, "Yes, I have. I see Him as clearly as I see you, only in a much deeper sense."
Under Ramakrishna's guidance, Narendra’s skepticism turned into spiritual realization. After his Guru’s death in 1886, Narendra and a small group of disciples took monastic vows. He eventually took the name Swami Vivekananda, signifying the "bliss of discerning wisdom."
The Chicago Speech (1893)
Vivekananda spent several years as a wandering monk (Parivrajaka), traveling across India and witnessing the extreme poverty of the masses. He realized that India needed both spiritual revitalization and material progress.
In 1893, he traveled to the United States to represent Hinduism at the World’s Parliament of Religions in Chicago. He began his speech with the words:"Sisters and Brothers of America!"
The audience was so moved that they gave him a standing ovation for two minutes. He spoke of universal tolerance and the unity of all religions, famously using the metaphor of different rivers all flowing into the same ocean. This speech instantly made him a global celebrity and a "Messenger of Indian Wisdom" to the West.
Legacy and Institutions
Vivekananda’s mission was "Man-making." He believed that education should manifest the perfection already within a human being.
- Ramakrishna Mission (1897): He founded this organization to provide social service, healthcare, and education. Its motto is Atmano mokshartham jagat hitaya cha (For one’s own salvation and for the welfare of the world).
- Belur Math: He established the headquarters of the Ramakrishna Order in West Bengal, which remains a major spiritual center today.
- National Youth Day: In India, his birthday (January 12) is celebrated annually to honor his belief in the power of the youth to transform the nation.
Final Days
Swami Vivekananda’s intense work and travels took a toll on his health. On July 4, 1902, at the age of 39, he passed away at Belur Math. His disciples believe he attained Mahasamadhi (a yogic state of intentional passing).
